Jimmy Kimmel is going from late night to primetime. For one night only, at least.
The comedian will host the 2012 Emmy Awards, ABC announced today, joking in a statement he hopes "to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars,” referring to Murphy’s extremely short tenure as host of this year’s Academy Awards.

This will be Kimmel's first time hosting
the evening, although he has previously emceed the American Music Awards
and the ESPY Awards.
In recent years, the Emmy hosts have
included Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Patrick Harris and, in a
horribly-failed experiment, a quintet of reality TV stars.
